  • About CMI

    The CMI holds a Conference every 3 – 4 years at which the work of International Working Groups and/or International Sub-Committees is debated and, if appropriate, concluded with a resolution at the plenary session at the end of the Conference.

The Malta Maritime Law Association recently organized a Seminar on Developing Trends in Ship Finance. Dr Ann Fenech gave an introduction to the topic and explained the work of the CMI IWG on Ship Finance Security Practices, which she is the Chairman of. Dr Ivan Vella spoke about Traditional Ship Finance, while Dr Nicholas Valenzia looked into New Sources of Ship Finance. Dr Caroline Risiott and Dr Jan Rossi addressed Legislative Developments reflecting recent Trends in Ship Finance and Dr Adrian Attard described Current Enforcement and New Challenges. The seminar was held on 15 March 2017 at the Chamber of Commerce in Valletta, Malta. The presentations can be downloaded from the MMLA website under http://www.mmla.org.mt/seminar-ship-finance/

The International Foundation for the Law of the Sea (IFLOS) will hold its eleventh annual Summer Academy “Promoting Ocean Governance and Peaceful Settlement of Dispute” at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg from 23 July to 18 August, 2017.

Belated congratulations are due to Professor Aldo Chircop (who chairs the IWG on Polar Shipping for the CMI) for his appointment last year as Canada Research Chair in Maritime Law and Policy, a most prestigious appointment.

Congratulations to Alfred Popp QC, an Honorary Member of the Canadian MLA, for his appointment as a Member of the Order of Canada. Alfred Popp, who chaired the Legal Committee of the IMO from 1993 to 2005, was appointed by the Governor General of Canada with the following citation: “For his contributions to Maritime Law as a Lawyer, Policy Expert and Administrator”.

About CMI



The CMI holds a Conference every 3 – 4 years at which the work of International Working Groups and/or International Sub-Committees is debated and, if appropriate, concluded with a resolution at the plenary session at the end of the Conference.

In between the Conferences, Colloquia and Symposia are sometimes organised by National Maritime Law Association in conjunction with the CMI. In years when there is such a meeting, the annual Assembly of the CMI will be organised in conjunction therewith and otherwise as a separate event.
