The Comitรฉ Maritime International is pleased to announce that our very own Secretary-General, Dr Rosalie Balkin, has been named the recipient of the 2024 International Maritime Prize by the IMO Council, following her nomination by the Government of Australia. This announcement was made by the IMO COUNCIL at its session last Friday.
This prize honours Dr Balkinโs significant contributions to international maritime law throughout her long and fruitful career.
Dr Balkin served as IMO Director of the Legal Affairs and External Relations Division and has been Secretary-General of the CMI since 2017. Her work spans legal reform, maritime education, and advocacy for seafarersโ rights.
Since 2014, she has acted as Legal Advisor to the International Oil Pollution Compensation (IOPC) Funds, playing a key role in preparing the resolutions that dissolved the 1971 Fund and established the 1992 Fund, strengthening the global compensation system. She is also a founding member of the Advisory Group of Seafarers’ Rights International, which promotes fair treatment and legal protection for seafarers. She has maintained wide engagement with the maritime community, including the World Maritime University.
The award will be presented at the IMO Awards Ceremony.
