CMI President Ann Fenech accepted the invitation of Bertrand ‘Bert’ Smith, Director General of the Maritime Authority of Jamaica, to visit Jamaica and share the details of the Convention on the International Effects of Judicial Sales of Ships with the relevant authorities.
It was the case of the BRIGHT STAR, a vessel which was rearrested in Malta in June 2018 by a previous creditor of the same ship, previously called TRADING FABRIZIA,ย despite her free and unencumbered Judicial Sale in Jamaica, which assisted in convincing the commission at UNCITRAL: United Nations Commission on International Trade Law to take on the work.
During her visit, Ann Fenech has so far met with the Dean of the Faculty of Law at The University of the West Indies, the Attorney General, and delivered a lecture to The Jamaican Bar Association.
The importance and relevance of the Convention were very well received, and we look forward to Jamaica signing and ratifying the Convention.
