2024 UN Treaty Event and the Convention on The International Effects of Judicial Sales of Ships
Between the 24th and 27th September 2024, the 2024 Treaty Event will be held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The Treaty Event is an event held every year by the UN, normally in conjunction with the holding of the General Assembly of the UN. This year it will take place in conjunction with the General Debate of the seventy-ninth session of the United Nations General Assembly. The event provides the perfect opportunity for states to sign up to any of the treaties of which the Secretary General of the United Nations is the depositary.
The CMI would like to encourage States to use this occasion to sign up to the Convention on the International Effects of Judicial Sales of Ships. It is being said that the process involved in the negotiation, adoption and signing of this Convention was one of the most efficient ever. At CMI we are delighted that this was indeed the case however our job is not yet over.
We will continue to pursue the cause and encourage as many countries as possible to sign the convention and ratify the convention so that the objective which the convention seeks to achieve which is certainty in maritime trade can become a reality as soon as possible.
The 2nd signing ceremony held in Malta last month on the 19th of June saw signatory states increase to 26 with El Salvador having already ratified the Convention. We need another 2 States to ratify the convention to trigger the coming into force of the Convention which occurs after the passage of 180 days from the third ratifying state.
