RUMLA Conference Marks 120 Years of the Russian Maritime Law Society
Held on 31 October 2025, the event attracted around a hundred guests, among them prominent Russian maritime lawyers, representatives of major shipping and insurance companies, distinguished legal scholars, and others drawn to the world of commercial shipping.
The conference programme comprised two parts: it opened with the presentation of a unique piece of research into the history of the 1905 Russian Maritime Law Society, followed by expert-led discussions on six current challenges facing the industry:
- Preparing the next generation of maritime law professionals.
- Strengthening sector-specific educational initiatives for the judiciary.
- Trends in maritime dispute resolution, including MAC practice and the challenges of recognising and enforcing foreign arbitral awards in Russia.
- The role of mediation in resolving maritime disputes.
- What needs to change in order to modernise the legal regulation of maritime transport.
- Navigating relations between shipowners and the state in the current landscape.
As part of the programme, RUMLA Vice President Konstantin Putrya delivered a detailed overview of Russia’s membership within the Comité Maritime International (CMI). He emphasised that CMI membership enables Russian experts to contribute to the unification of maritime law.
The conference also featured an awards ceremony for the winners of the essay prize marking the 120th anniversary of the Russian Maritime Law Society. The authors and topics of the best submissions can be found here. [https://rumla.org/news/news20251026.html]
