Appointment of next Secretary General of the IMO
The CMI would like to congratulate Mr. Arsenio Antonio Dominguez Velasco of Panama for his appointment as the next Secretary General of the IMO.
The CMI looks forward to working with Mr. Dominguez Velasco and to taking the relationship between our two organisations from strength to strength. This relationship traces its roots to the creation of the Legal Committee of what was then called The Intergovernmental Maritime Consultative Organisation (IMCO) following the major oil spill from the Torrey Canyon incident of 1967. The deliverable of the legal committee was to produce a convention which would deal with liability for damages caused by oil pollution caused by tankers. The CMI played a key role in the drafting of the International Convention on Civil Liability for Oil Pollution Damage until its adoption in 1969.
The CMI thanks Mr. Kitack Lim for his sterling work and efforts during his tenure which terminates in December 2023 and we look forward to working with Mr. Dominguez Velasco as he takes the reigns of this important organisation in very challenging times.
