Day 2 – IMO LEG 112
The first day’s discussions at the IMO’s Legal Committee session focused on measures to prevent unlawful practices related to fraudulent registrations, fraudulent registries, and fraudulent activities. A working group was set up to decide on terms of reference for a correspondence group that will conduct a scoping exercise on existing rules aimed at preventing illegal operations in the maritime sector.
Importantly for the CMI – Comité Maritime International the LEG committee agreed on a new work output to examine the suitability of IMO liability regimes with respect to alternative fuels.
Since July 2023, the CMI has established an IWG on decarbonisation, which last year produced the Gothenburg Decarbonisation Discussion Papers, one of which addresses civil liability in relation to alternative fuels. CMI was therefore delighted to co-sponsor the proposal which has referenced the work being done by the CMI.
CMI President, Ann Fenech was joined by Haris Zografakis and Jolien Kruit chair and member of the IWG on decarbonisation.
