EXCO Meetings – May 2024
The Executive Council (EXCO) held two meetings in Gothenburg, the first on Tuesday 21st May at Vinge Law Firm in the city and the second (much shorter meeting) on Friday 24th May at the Clarion Hotel, after close of business of the Gothenburg Colloquium.
The first meeting was opened by our President, Ann Fenech, with a review of CMI’s progress over the past few months. She singled out for special mention CMI’s social media and publications—the Yearbook for the first time was not only ready for distribution at the Assembly but was also on line; the website had been refigured and modernised, LinkedIn was increasingly being used as a means of communication by NMLAs; and there had been a record number of entries in the News Letter.
Our Treasurer, Frank Stevens, explained how CMI’s accounting system operated under the switchover to an electronic system.
Rosalie Balkin, CMI Secretary-General, briefed EXCO on an offer by the Belgium agency Liberas to host the official CMI archives. The offer was timely given CMI’s concern over the lack of space for the archives at CMI Headquarters. Liberas’s premises in Ghent had been visited by the Management Committee during its March meeting held at CMI Headquarters, which had recommended accepting the offer. This was endorsed by EXCO and Rosalie, together with John O’Connor (CMI’s Vice-President), were tasked with drafting the contract, together with Liberas.
Much of EXCO’s time was devoted to a review of the work of the IWGs and SCs over the past year, as identified in the reports submitted by their respective chairs.
EXCO approved the revision of the Guidelines on Titulary Membership prepared by John O’Connor and Rosalie. These were intended to clarify for NMLAs what information is required to enable EXCO to approve applications for Titulary Membership and also emphasised that any such applications be submitted in ample time for EXCO to take a decision.
EXCO approved two new Titulary Members, namely, Dr Vincent Power SC and John Wilde Crosbie (both submitted by the Irish NMLA).
EXCO approved the application of the Maritime Law Association (UAE) NPIO for Membership of CMI.
EXCO agreed to meet via email to approve the accounts in advance of the 2024 General Assembly.
