Malaysia MLA – The Asian Maritime Law and Business Conference 2024
THE ASIAN MARITIME LAW AND BUSINESS CONFERENCE 2024
The International Malaysian Society of Maritime Law (IMSML) organised the Asian Maritime Law and Business Conference 2024 on 28-29 November 2024 at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in collaboration with the Maritime Law Association of Singapore (MLAS). It is an inaugural collaboration between the national maritime law associations (NMLAs) of two major maritime nations, Malaysia and Singapore.
With the strong attendance of close to 200 registered participants and 40 speakers and moderators coming from all over Asia, it was a remarkably successful event.
The event was graced with the presence of the honourable Malaysian Minister of Transport, YB Tuan Anthony Loke Siew Fook who delivered the Special Address during the opening ceremony. We were also honoured to have the presence of the High Court Judge of Malaya (Admiralty) Kuala Lumpur, the Hon. Justice Ong Chee Kwan who delivered the Keynote Address and the Federal Court Judge the Hon. Justice Tan Sri Datuk Nallini Padmanathan
With the maritime industry facing unprecedented challenges in recent years, from economic disruptions to shifts in regulatory frameworks and technological advancements, there is a growing need for collaboration and partnership within Asia to address the challenges as well as gain opportunities in an industry that unites nations and drives economies.
The importance of maritime economy in the Asian region could not be undermined, and both NMLAs recognise the need for maritime industry in Asia to thrive with its geographical advantages, natural resources and available talents that will flourish the Asian maritime market.
True to IMSML’s mission to have a “Single Voice for Maritime Malaysia”, the 2- day Conference provided a platform for sharing of knowledge, information and experience on issues relating to maritime and shipping, amongst maritime industry players both domestic and international. It is also an event for participants to acquire new knowledge, foster new friendships and acquaintances and to venture into collaboration for the betterment of the Asian maritime industry.
The 8 panel sessions during the Conference covered an array of topics ranging from ports, green shipping, sustainability, ship funding, war risks and insurance, issues affecting freight, container and bulk shipping, maritime trends, maritime arbitration and maritime law development. It ended with a special panel session with Asian NMLAs representatives from Bangladesh, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.
The organisers would like to thank and acknowledge Comite Maritime International (CMI) for their support in promoting the event and we are proud to carry CMI’s logo as our supporting organisation. With the success of the Asian Maritime Law and Business Conference 2024 held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the International Malaysian Society of Maritime Law (IMSML) hopes to have the opportunity to collaborate more with CMI and other NMLAs for future maritime events.
