Lecture in full reproduced below
Professor Michael Sturley was invited to deliver the Berlingieri Lecture this year at the CMI’s Colloquium in Gothenburg.
Since 2024 sees the 100th anniversary of the Hague Rules, it was deemed most appropriate to invite Professor Sturley, who had worked closely with Professor Berlingieri and a world authority on the Carriage of Goods by sea, to deliver this prestigious lecture. The Lecture has been reproduced on the CMI’s Website which can be accessed through the following link: Berlingieri Lecture delivered by Professor Michael Sturley – Comite Maritime International – CMI
Professor Sturley provided a comprehensive history and analysis of the Hague Rules, which were adopted in 1924 to establish a uniform legal framework for the carriage of goods by sea. He detailed the state of the law before the Hague Rules, the reasons and process behind their adoption, their success, the issues that arose over time, and the lessons that can be learnt from their implementation.
A discussion on this lecture given by Professor Sturley, along with an interview, is featured in an article posted on the website of The University of Texas at Austin – School of Law.
